What Is MadeThis and Why I Use It to Run My Entire Online Business
I've tried a lot of platforms. Gumroad, Podia, Payhip, Teachable, and a DIY setup with Stripe + Notion. Each one had something that didn't quite fit — too complex, too expensive, too limited, or too much friction between "someone wants to buy this" and "they actually bought it."
I've been on MadeThis.com for over a year now and haven't seriously evaluated anything else. That's not something I say lightly. Here's why.

What MadeThis Actually Is
MadeThis is a platform that lets you build an AI-powered online business — specifically built for selling digital products, courses, memberships, and services.
What sets it apart from generic e-commerce platforms is that it's built specifically for creators and solopreneurs who want to build a real business, not just a product listing. It has an AI co-founder built in — not a chatbot that writes blog posts, but an integrated system that helps you make actual business decisions: what to build, how to position it, how to price it.
That's different from most platforms, which are just storefronts. MadeThis is more like a business operating system.
What I Use It For
Product hosting and delivery. All my digital products live on MadeThis. When someone buys, they get immediate access to download or access what they bought. I've had zero failed deliveries and zero checkout issues in over a year.
Checkout and payment processing. MadeThis handles the entire checkout flow. I don't touch payment processing — it's fully managed. This was a non-obvious win for me: the simpler the checkout, the higher the conversion rate. Every friction point you remove is sales you don't lose.
Business strategy guidance. The AI co-founder feature genuinely helps. When I'm deciding whether to build a new product or expand an existing one, I work through the logic with it. When I'm stuck on pricing, it gives me data-backed reasoning. It's not perfect, but it's better than guessing alone.
Customer management. All my buyer data lives in one place. I can see purchase history, contact customers if there's an issue, and understand who my actual audience is.
What Makes MadeThis Different From Gumroad
I used Gumroad for about four months before switching. The differences are real.
Gumroad is a marketplace with discovery features. Buyers can find your products through Gumroad's own browse/search. That sounds good until you realize that discovery feature mostly drives buyers to your competition, not to you. It's a listing platform that happens to accept payments.
MadeThis is a business platform. The focus is on building something that stands on its own — your own store, your own brand, your own customer relationships. You bring the traffic; MadeThis handles everything else.
For me, that's the right trade-off. I control my audience. I'm not dependent on a marketplace's algorithm to get discovered. My store looks like mine, not like a page on someone else's platform.
The fee structures are also different, but I'll leave that comparison for a separate post. The more important difference is the philosophy: do you want a listing in someone else's marketplace, or do you want your own store?
What MadeThis Is Not
I want to be honest about this: MadeThis isn't magic. The AI features help, but you still have to do the work — build the products, write the content, drive the traffic. The platform doesn't make up for a product nobody wants or copy that doesn't convert.
It's also not the cheapest option if you're testing whether digital products work at all. If you want to put one product up with zero commitment and see what happens, Gumroad's free tier gets you there faster. MadeThis is for people who have decided they're building a real business and want infrastructure that supports that.
Why I've Stayed
The honest answer is compounding. Every month I use MadeThis, my data gets more useful, my store gets more refined, and the switching cost goes up. Not in a trapped way — in a "this thing I've built is genuinely good and I don't want to start over" way.
The checkout conversion is high. The delivery is flawless. The AI co-founder has helped me avoid at least two product decisions I would have regretted. And I've never had a support issue that wasn't resolved quickly.
For someone running a digital product business solo — which is exactly what I do — that track record matters more than any feature list comparison.
If you're building a digital product business and haven't landed on a platform yet, I'd encourage you to look at MadeThis.com seriously. Not because it's perfect for everyone, but because it's built for exactly the kind of business I'm describing in every post on this site: a lean, one-person operation selling expertise in digital form.
That's the business I want to run. MadeThis is the infrastructure I run it on.
